Melanocortin-1

The Melanocortin-1 Receptor gene, sometimes known as the "ginger gene", is predicted by some scientists to die out in the next century. Only a male and female carrying the gene can produce a red-haired child and only 2-4% of the world's population carries the gene.

This series of photographs is a celebration of the gene's physical traits - red hair (of all shades), freckles, pale skin etc.

I want the world to see, as I do, the beauty of this historically much-maligned variant of human coloration.

I photographed only "real people", volunteers who responded to my quest for red-haired models featured in a media campaign.

The first solo exhibition of the work at the Quadrant Lounge, Lichfield St, Wolverhampton attracted the attention of the regional and national media (See Links page for links to some of the footage). The tongue-in-cheek opening night event, nicknamed "Gingerfest" is what became the centre of media focus and the exhibition has even been wrongly named "Gingerfest".

See Exhibitions page to find out where these photographs can be seen.

New venues for the exhibition are now being sought.
